Zine reviews

All zines reviewed by Chuck0.

Alternative Press Review vol.2, no.4 (Spring/Summer 1997)

This quarterly guide to the alternative press is starting to really catch its stride. In addition to the excellent dose of book and zine reviews, this issue has articles on DIY media, micro-radio, bisexuality, and ending the car culture. Includes an interview with Allan Nairn and a full complement of funny cartoons and cool graphics.

68 pgs * Magazine * $5; $16/year
Black Autonomy volume 3, issue 1 (January-February 1997)

The place to go for news and opinion from the black revolution. News about police brutality cases, political prisoners, Copwatch activities, and official racism. Lorenzo Komboa Ervin writes about "Bill Clinton, Racism, and the Black Church Burnings."

16 pgs * Zine * $1 or $2 by mail
Black Sheets no. 11

This is probably one of the best, radical sex zines around. Black Sheets is not afraid to cover controversial and the occasional taboo subject, pushing freedom of speech to the edge. Essays, art, reviews, erotic photos, and explicit ads.

50 pgs * Magazine * $6; $20/4 issues
the defenestrator issue 1 (Mid September)

A new news-zine by the anarchist movement in Philly. Has short articles, but the strength here is the many event announcements and the lengthy calendar of events. This kind of approach should be adopted by other regional movements.

12 pgs * Zine * Donation *
Freedom vol.58, no.12 (June 21st, 1997)

England's long-running anarchist newspaper. News on the Liverpool dockers, protests against British Aerospace on behalf of East Timor, and Venezuela. Colin Ward writes about the nature of work in "The Advocates of Laziness."

8 pgs * Tabloid * 14 pounds/24 issues in the U.K.; 22 outside U.K. surface, 34 airmail *

fucktooth number 22

A wonderful personal-zine which covers Jen's life, loves, and her love for music. In a world of boring, egocentric personal-zines about people who need to get a life, fucktooth is that rare exception that rises above the rest. Jen's zine goes to prove that those who are ACTIVE in their lives, usually have something interesting to say about them.

88 pgs * Jen Angel * $2 * Jen has moved to San Francisco since publishing this issue, so it's best to reach her at the MRR address listed below.
Groundswell volume 3, issue 2 (July 1997)

Anti-authoritarian zine which has an interview with whistleblower Tom Wheeler, who blew the whistle on fake lobbying groups set up by Big Tobacco.

12 pgs * Zine * $10/year for 12 issues
Guinea Pig Zero

Rapidly becoming one of my favorite non-anarchist zines. GPZ covers the shadow world of live human testing and does so creatively. Human subjects are often risking their health for science and medicine, so it's about time there was a zine that talked about them and their concerns.

Guinea Pig Zero * A Journal for Human Research Subjects
Industrial Worker #1602, vol.94, no.5 (June 1997)

The Industrial Worker is still one of the best news sources on what the labor movement is doing. Includes updates on IWW activities, organizing campaigns, and international labor activities. Articles include "Abolishing the Wage System: are industrial cooperatives the answer?" and "Snyder's workers need fighting union."

12 pgs * Tabloid * $1 or $15/year
Kick It Over no. 35 (Summer 1995)

This excellent zine is similar to Practical Anarchy in many ways. Lots of thoughtful, pragmatic articles including "Anarcho-syndicalism, technology and ecology" by Graham Purchase, "Does work really work" by L. Susan Brown, "The Abolition of work and other myths" by Neala Schleuning, and "To steal or not to steal: some thoughts on the ethics of (T/t)heft, (J/j)ustice, and capitalism" by our own Joe Average.

76 pgs * Magazine * $3; $12/4 issues
Librarians at Liberty vol.4, no.2 (June 1997)

Excellent semi-annual newsletter for radical librarians. This issue looks at the Hawaii outsourcing controversy, Theodore Kaczynski, and censorship practiced by librarians. Also includes vol.5, no.1.

32 pgs * Newsletter * $5; $10/year
The Match! no.91 (Winter 1996-1997)

One of the oldest anarchist magazines in print and still one of the best. Regular sections include "Crap-Detection Department," "Freedom Eclipsed," and "Who the Police Beat." Editor Fred Woodworth speculates on the whereabouts of Madalyn Murray O'Hair in his update on the American Atheists. This issue also includes a long, lively letters section.

92 pgs * Journal * $2.75; $10/4 issues (cash only) .
MAXIMUMROCKNROLL #172 (September 1997)
The grandmother of all punk zines, MRR shows that punk music is still relevant. In each issue of this monthly you can find music and zine reviews, band interviews, and lots and lots of ads. I don't follow the scene that closely, but my favorite part are the columns, where just about everything gets talked about.

100+ pgs * Magazine * $3 or $18/6 issues
Meander Quarterly vol.7, no.1 (April 1997)

It's kind of unfair to review a zine that the reviewer is currently editing, but here goes anyway. Editorship of this zine rotates on a yearly basis, with this reviewer being the current editor (Chuck0). The MQ is published by the Affinity Group of Evolutionary Anarchists, which is an international networking group. This issue has a brief history of the zine and an article by Ed D'Angelo titled "The unabomber's Relation to Anarchism and the Left."

16 pgs * Zine * $2 *
Rabble Review #1 (Summer 1997)
A very exciting new anti-authoritarian zine, Rabble Review is for whistle blowers, corporate resisters, disgruntled workers, and their supporters. The first issue has an article titled "Creative Sabotage in the Workplace" by Tom Wheeler; it details how he blew the whistle on a fake tobacco industry front group called Contributions Watch. Highly recommended.

48 pgs * Magazine * $4 or $16 for 4 issues (one year)
The Shadow #41 (April-July 1997)
The radical anarchist newspaper from New York City. While its specialty is covering the squatting scene, the Shadow is also an excellent source of news, articles, and reviews.

24 pgs * Newspaper * $2 or $15 for 10 issues *
Slingshot #58 (Summer 1997)

A really good anarchist newspaper crammed with news and useful info. This issue has articles on squatting in San Francisco, midwifery vs. the State, needle exchanges, Peru, radical bike advocacy, and micro radio. If Practical Anarchy did a newspaper, it would look like this.

16 pgs * Tabloid * $1 (bulk mail prepaid) or $2 First Class after issue comes out, $2.50 int.
The State Adversary no.28 (Summer 1997)

Anarchist zine from Aotearoa. In addition to several news articles, this issue includes articles: "Anarchism and Censorship" by Catherine Amey and "Timberlands West Coast Ltd" by Sian Robinson.

20 pgs * Zine * $10 (New Zealand)/four issues
Temp Slave issue 8

One of the best (anti-)work zines to come along in some time. If you hate work, this zine is highly recommended.

56 pgs * Zine * $2 * Keffo,
Workers Solidarity no.49 (Autumn 1996)

Irish anarchist newspaper. This issue has a special look back at the Spanish Revolution.

12 pgs * Newspaper * 75p outside Ireland * WSM,
Zine World #1

Nothing but zine reviews here, but more thorough than Factsheet Five. Not as many reviews as FF, but this is more a pocket guide to the "zine world." Recommended.

60 pgs * Zine * $3 * 924 Valencia St.
